SmarterMail Anti-Spam (SORBS) settings changed for SHS

by ViUX on 03/20/2010 07:23 PM

Members of the ViUX Hostmaster Team have made a system-wide change to the prior SmarterMail Anti-Spam settings on our Shared Hosting Servers (SHS).

This change was to disable SMTP Blocking for sending server IP Addresses that were listed in the SORBS Anti-Spam Database.

The reason for this change was several recent reports of messages not being received by customers with e-mail hosted on our network; and each time we checked the SMTP server logs to see what happened to the messages when they arrived, most were found to have been blocked by SORBS.

Since SMTP Blocking happens BEFORE a message is accepted and processed by the system, even setting the senders as "Trusted" would not prevent the blocking from taking place.

SORBS is a third party Anti-Spam Database over which we have no direct influence or control; however they have proved to be very accurate and reliable in the past.

Since we have now begun to experience this issue, going forward, SORBS will be used ONLY for Anti-Spam Scoring and Filtering... but NOT for SMTP Blocking. This should resolve the issue with desired messages being blocked by SORBS even when the sender is set as trusted, but it could also result in more spam being received. We will monitor this closing and take any needed actions in that regard.
